The product that we used for the test measurements was granulated potassium carbonate with Polyvinylpyrrolidon as binder. The particles have a high sphericity, therefore their morphology should not influence the measurements and the different measurement techniques should give similar results.
We found that the Camsizer results were very similar to sieve analysis. The laser light diffraction showed also comparable values concerning average/mean diameters. But the shape of the distributions, especially when examining multimodal particle populations, was very different. For example, when mixing bimodal glass bead particle populations, the Camsizer was able to resolve the distribution in the same way as sieve analysis did, whereas laser light diffraction showed a very smooth spline curve.
Further advantages of the Camsizer, compared to the other techniques are the very high reproducibility, fast automated measurements and the ability to obtain the product without any damage for further or repeated analysis.
As already mentioned, we also had the opportunity to compare the Camsizer to another particle measurement device following the same technique even though several years older. The two cameras of the Camsizer as well as the automated threshold adjustment for particle detection were responsible for a significant increase in reproducibility and accuracy of measurement. Other small innovations like automated hopper adjustment and compressed air supplying device facilitate the use of the Camsizer 2006 a lot (also in comparison to Camsizer 2004).
The innovation of Camsizer 2006 in comparison to Camsizer 2004 concerning precision is the doubling of the camera resolution which allows the measurement of each single particle while also having an increase in accuracy.
The software of Camsizer 2006 hasn’t undergone major changes compared to the previous version, at least concerning the graphical user interface; therefore upgrade was quite easy without reading the manual again. However, it is much more organized now and even easier to understand. The software allows calculating and displaying almost all graphs, mean diameters or morphology parameters one can think of.
Although we didn’t take advantage of all the options so far, we were quite impressed how many possibilities of analysis the device offers.
